Redshift
Amazon Redshift
An AWS-managed data warehouse for large-scale data analysis.
In one sentence
An AWS-managed data warehouse for large-scale data analysis.
Overview
Amazon Redshift is a data warehouse service for analyzing large volumes of data with SQL.
Common use cases
- BI analytics
- Sales data analysis
- Aggregating logs and business data
CLF-C02 exam points
- Used as a data warehouse
- Suited for analyzing large volumes of data
- Designed for analytics workloads, not OLTP
SAA-C03 exam points
- Can be combined with an S3 data lake for analysis architectures
- Often combined with QuickSight or Glue in analytics platforms
- Tends to be overkill for small-scale MVPs
Practical Use
Amazon Redshift is a cloud data warehouse service provided by AWS. It is designed to execute analytical queries against petabyte-scale data at high speed, using a columnar storage and Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) architecture that distributes processing across multiple nodes for parallel execution. Because it offers a SQL interface, existing BI tools and SQL clients can connect directly without modification. Available deployment models include a provisioned configuration in which users specify the node type and node count to run a cluster, and Amazon Redshift Serverless, which automatically provisions compute resources on demand. Redshift Spectrum extends the service by enabling direct SQL queries against data stored in Amazon S3 without first loading it into Redshift, enabling integrated analysis across data lakes and the data warehouse. Major use cases include building an enterprise data warehouse by aggregating large volumes of data collected from multiple systems, serving as the analytical backend for BI tools (Amazon QuickSight, Tableau, Power BI, and others), integrated analysis with Amazon S3 data lakes, and aggregating data for machine learning preprocessing. While general-purpose relational databases for OLTP workloads (Amazon RDS / Aurora) handle transactional application processing, Redshift is optimized for aggregation and analytical queries. This division of roles is repeatedly tested in CLF-C02.

Cost notes
- Billed based on clusters or serverless usage
- Tends to increase costs in learning-purpose MVPs
Security notes
- Separate data access permissions between IAM and DB roles
- Consider masking when analyzed data includes personal information
