Practical Use

Amazon QuickSight is a cloud-native business intelligence (BI) service provided by AWS. It connects to data sources and enables users to create and share dashboards and reports. Supported data sources include AWS data stores such as Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, Amazon RDS, Amazon Athena, and Amazon Aurora, as well as Salesforce, on-premises SQL databases, and CSV or Excel file uploads. Major features include drag-and-drop visualization creation, high-speed aggregation through an in-memory engine called SPICE (Super-fast, Parallel, In-memory Calculation Engine), dashboard sharing within an organization and embedding into web applications, and built-in machine learning capabilities for forecasting, anomaly detection, and natural language queries (Amazon Q in QuickSight). The pricing model is divided between Author and Reader users on a per-user monthly basis, with readers also having the option of a session-based plan billed only for actual viewing sessions. SPICE capacity is billed separately on a monthly basis. No server provisioning or dedicated BI infrastructure is required, and usage can begin simply by registering users and connecting to data sources. Typical use cases include dashboarding internal KPIs, visualizing analysis results from S3 logs queried via Athena, and serving as an internal BI platform that delivers aggregated Redshift data to executives and sales teams.
