App Runner

AWS App Runner

A service to publish container-based web apps with minimal operational overhead.

In one sentence

A service to publish container-based web apps with minimal operational overhead.

Overview

AWS App Runner is a managed service that lets you easily deploy web applications from containers or source code.

Common use cases

  • Publishing containerized Web APIs
  • Running small-scale web apps
  • Publishing apps with reduced infrastructure management

CLF-C02 exam points

  • Runs web apps as a managed service
  • Supports container-based deployment
  • Reduces EC2 management

SAA-C03 exam points

  • Can simplify operations compared to ECS in some scenarios
  • Check the cost of always-on workloads
  • For static sites only, S3 + CloudFront is a better fit

Practical Use

AWS App Runner is a managed service that lets you deploy web applications and APIs directly from a container image or a source code repository. Without separately configuring foundational components such as VPCs, load balancers, and Auto Scaling groups, simply specifying a container image provisions an execution environment with an HTTPS endpoint. In practice, App Runner is adopted for publishing small to medium-sized web apps and APIs where the operational overhead of ECS or EKS is unjustified, for containerizing internal tools, and for running prototypes in production. App Runner trades operational simplicity for some constraints. Because its pricing model assumes continuous operation (charging for active vCPU and memory hours), a minimum baseline cost is incurred even during periods of no traffic. In contrast, Lambda + API Gateway architectures incur almost no charges when there are no requests, but they use a function execution model rather than a container execution model, which changes how the application must be structured. App Runner suits cases where you want to run a continuously running web server in a container but want to avoid the complexity of ECS, while Lambda + API Gateway suits cases where you want to run lightweight per-request processing serverlessly. CLF-C02 / SAA-C03 ask about App Runner in contexts such as "a service that runs container applications in a managed way" and "a service that reduces operational overhead compared to ECS or EKS". Comparisons among ECS (Fargate), EKS, App Runner, and Lambda — organized by operational overhead, pricing model, and supported workload types — help with answering SAA-C03 architecture design questions. For purely static sites, an S3 + CloudFront architecture is superior to App Runner in both cost and fit.

Cost notes

  • Charged based on the compute resources used
  • Not used for the static site MVP

Security notes

  • Verify public exposure and environment variables
  • Restrict permissions on ECR images
