Which of the following is included as a pillar of the AWS Well-Architected Framework?

Choices

Explanation and answer

Read the explanation and correct answer (spoiler — try answering first)

Correct answer: B. Cost Optimization

Explanation

The AWS Well-Architected Framework includes pillars such as Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Sustainability.

Per-choice explanations

A. Manual server procurement

Incorrect. Automation and use of the cloud are emphasized rather than manual procurement.

B. Cost Optimization

Correct. Cost Optimization is an important pillar of the Well-Architected Framework.

C. Guaranteed flat pricing

Incorrect. Many AWS services use pay-as-you-go pricing.

D. Paper-based ledger management

Incorrect. Paper-based ledger management is not a pillar.

Practical Use

The AWS Well-Architected Framework is a collection of best practices for reviewing the design of workloads on the cloud, currently composed of six pillars (Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Sustainability). In practice, it is used for the design review of new systems, for re-architecture decisions on existing systems, and as a common language during internal architecture reviews. The AWS Well-Architected Tool, provided by AWS at no charge, allows you to answer questions aligned with each pillar per workload and to list improvement points (High Risk Issues and Medium Risk Issues). The central themes of each pillar play different roles. Operational Excellence covers deployment automation and operational standardization, Security covers IAM least privilege, encryption, and audit logs, Reliability covers Multi-AZ placement and backups, Performance Efficiency covers appropriate instance type selection and the use of caches, Cost Optimization covers resource inventory and pricing model optimization, and Sustainability covers resource efficiency and reduction of environmental impact. Although the pillars are independent, they influence each other, so you need to be conscious of trade-offs. For example, reducing resources too much for cost optimization can lower reliability. On CLF-C02, this content is asked in the form of which of the following is included as a pillar of the Well-Architected Framework, or which area is covered by the Cost Optimization pillar. Typical distractors include choices that are obviously not pillars of cloud design, such as paper-based ledger management, manual server procurement, or guaranteed flat pricing. From SAA-C03 onward, applied questions appear that ask, given a specific scenario, which pillar's perspective you should use to improve it, so you need to accurately associate the names of the six pillars with their central themes.
