Lambda
AWS Lambda
Runs code only when needed, without launching servers.
In one sentence
Runs code only when needed, without launching servers.
Overview
A serverless compute service that runs code without managing servers. Executes processing triggered by requests or events.
Common use cases
- Contact form submission processing
- Image conversion and file processing
- Scheduled batch processing combined with EventBridge
CLF-C02 exam points
- Billed based on invocation count and execution time
- No server management required
- Works well with API Gateway and DynamoDB
SAA-C03 exam points
- Suitable for short, event-driven processing
- Pay attention to network design when connecting to VPC
- Consider cold starts and timeouts
Practical Use
AWS Lambda is a serverless compute service that runs code without the need to provision or manage servers. Users register the function code they want to run, along with the runtime, memory, timeout, and other settings, and AWS automatically provisions and scales the execution environment. The code is triggered by events such as HTTP requests from API Gateway, S3 object creation, DynamoDB Streams, EventBridge schedules, and SQS message reception. Pricing is based on a combination of the number of requests and the execution time multiplied by the allocated memory. Because no resources run during idle periods, no charges accrue when there are no requests. The free tier provides one million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds of execution time per month. Major use cases include serverless APIs combined with API Gateway, data processing that responds to S3 or DynamoDB events, scheduled jobs triggered by EventBridge, and use as a single step within a Step Functions workflow. Supported runtimes include managed runtimes for Python, Node.js, Java, Go, .NET, and Ruby, with additional support for custom runtimes and container images. Each request has an execution time limit of up to 15 minutes, and constraints exist on deployment package size and the size of the ephemeral storage (/tmp). For long-running batch processing or large file processing, alternative services such as AWS Batch, ECS, or combinations with Step Functions become candidates.
Official Documentation
Cost notes
- Keeping executions short helps reduce costs
- Do not use Provisioned Concurrency in the MVP
Security notes
- Restrict the execution role to only the required DynamoDB tables
- Do not output personal or secret information in logs
